Static potential in the SU(2) Higgs model

    Get PDF
We present results for the static potential in the confinement phase of the SU(2) Higgs model on the lattice. Introducing a suitable matrix correlation function we observe string breaking at a distance r_b ~ 1.8 r_0, where the length scale r_0 has a value r_0 ~ 0.5 fm in QCD. The method presented here may lead the way towards a treatment of string breaking in QCD.Comment: LATTICE98(confine), 3 pages, 3 figure

String breaking in SU(2) gauge theory with scalar matter fields

We investigate the static potential in the confinement phase of the SU(2) Higgs model on the lattice, where this model is expected to have properties similar to QCD. We observe that Wilson loops are inadequate to determine the potential at large distances, where the formation of two color-neutral mesons is expected. Introducing smeared fields and a suitable matrix correlation function, we are able to overcome this difficulty. We observe string breaking at a distance rb1.8r0r_b \approx 1.8 r_0, where the length scale r0r_0 has a value r00.5fmr_0 \approx 0.5 fm in QCD. The method presented here may lead the way towards a treatment of string breaking in QCD.Comment: 10 pages, eqs.(7),(9) corrected, small changes in numerics, new figure

The solar flare and cosmic gamma-ray burst experiment aboard the Ulysses spacecraft

    Get PDF
The HUS-Ulysses team has prepared an instrument for the Ulysses spacecraft consisting of 2 Csi detectors and 2 Si surface barrier detectors for measuring x rays in the range 5 to 200 keV with up to 8 ms time resolution. The prime objectives of the experiment are the study of solar flares and cosmic gamma-ray bursts. The Ulysses mission will leave the ecliptic during the forthcoming solar maximum. The total time above ecliptic latitudes + or - 70 degrees is expected to be 230 days. The solar data can be used in conjunction with other experiments to measure the directivity of the emission and for correlative studies

First results of an ongoing high statistics study of the colour flux distribution around static quark sources in SU(2) gauge theory are presented. The flux tube profiles and widths have been investigated for several quark separations at beta=2.5 and beta=2.74. The results are tested against Michael's sum rules.Comment: 3 pages (LaTeX) with 4 epsf incl. PS figs., To be publ. in Proc. of Lattice '9

String breaking and lines of constant physics in the SU(2) Higgs model

We present results for the ground state and first excited state static potentials in the confinement "phase" of the SU(2) Higgs model. String breaking and the crossing of the energy levels are clearly visible. We address the question of the cut-off effects in our results and observe a remarkable scaling of the static potentials.Comment: LATTICE99(Higgs), 3 pages, 4 figure

A NOVEL LOOK AT THE MICHAEL LATTICE SUM RULES

    Get PDF
We reconsider the derivation of the Michael lattice sum rules, which relate the energy and action stored in a flux tube of a quark-antiquark pair to the static interquark potential, and show that they require essential corrections. We then find, using the coupling constant sum rule of Karsch, that the total Minkowski field energy does not match the interquark potential, if one follows conventional notions. The implications of this result are discussed.Comment: 8 pages, Plain Te
